Bhola violence a ‘deep-rooted conspiracy against the state’: High Court

The High Court on Monday observed that Sunday's violence in Bhola over a Facebook post is a 'deep-rooted conspiracy against the state'.

The High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader made the observation after Supreme Court lawyer Roniul Islam brought the issue to the High Court's notice.

On Sunday, four people were killed and hundreds injured in Borhanuddin upazila of Bhola in clashes between police and local people. The local people were demonstrating for punishment of a youth who, they claimed, had hurt their religious sentiment in a Facebook post.

Roniul Islam placed the press reports on the incident before the High Court.

As the people were killed in police firing, police investigation into the incident will not be neutral, he said.

Therefore, he demanded a judicial probe into the violence and also demanded that the High Court issue a suo moto (voluntary) rule on this issue.

In response the court said, "The government is taking care of the matter, and an investigation of the incident has already started. Therefore, we will not interfere right now."

"If the law-enforcement agencies fail, we will take the matter into consideration then," said the court.

The High Court hoped that the police investigation will reveal the truth behind the incident.

Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar represented the state.
