The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has brought back home six Bangladeshi fishermen who were captured by Myanmar's Arakan Army.

They were brought back after 28 days this afternoon through the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban's Naikhongchari upazila, said Lieutenant Colonel Md Faruk Hossain Khan, commander of BGB's 34th Battalion in Cox's Bazar.

The fishermen who were returned are Md Sohel, Md Ismail, Md Jasim, Md Hossain Ali, Md Shafique and Md Shaheen.

Lieutenant Colonel Faruk said on 1 March, two Bangladeshi fishing boats in the Naf River accidentally entered Myanmar's territorial waters.

"Amid ongoing conflict, the Arakan Army, which controls the border area, captured the boats along with five fishermen. Then, on 25 March, the Arakan Army captured another fisherman from the Naf River.

"After the incident was reported, the BGB began efforts to communicate with the Arakan Army to bring back the captive Bangladeshi fishermen. After prolonged negotiations, the Arakan Army agreed to release these fishermen," he added.

The fishermen were later handed over to their families.
