The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has successfully brought back 73 fishermen who were abducted at different times by the Arakan Army from the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf.
Confirming the matter, BGB Ramu Sector Commander Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed said the fishermen were returned through the Jaliapara transit jetty in Teknaf at around 4:30pm today (16 February) following a series of negotiations with the Arakan Army.
Colonel Mohiuddin further said, "The fishermen were later handed over to their families through local representatives and the district administration."
"The repatriation was made possible after continuous discussions with the Arakan Army. They claimed that the fishermen had been detained for crossing into Myanmar waters. Negotiations are ongoing to secure the release of other detained fishermen," he added.
According to media reports, at least 200 fishermen, along with their trawlers, had been detained at various times from the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal by the Arakan Army. With the return of these 73 individuals, many are still awaiting release.
