A group of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists at the Chittagong University (CU) physically assaulted a student linked to the banned Chhatra League and placed a garland of shoes around his neck.

The incident took place on Monday night near the Shaheed Minar in front of Agrani Bank on campus.

The victim, Shawon Hossain, is a student of the 2016-17 session in the Department of Statistics. He was known to be an active member of the CFC faction of the Chhatra League.

In response to the incident, Shawon said, "During the July uprising, I stood with the general students. I left campus on the 9th and haven't posted anything about the movement since."

Confirming the incident, CU Proctor Prof Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif said, "He has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for advanced treatment. He is currently undergoing care there."

According to Chhatra Dal leaders, Shawon had earlier been involved in assaulting one of their activists. The attackers are reportedly followers of Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, the organisational secretary of CU Chhatra Dal.

Chhatra Dal activist Shamim Uddin claimed, "During the fascist regime, we [JCD] had little presence on campus. I had a covert understanding with Chhatra Dal, which Shawon knew about. Later, he assaulted me and prevented me from returning to campus. There are even allegations of sexual assault against him. We didn't beat him – when we questioned him, he admitted his affiliation with the Chhatra League."

Following the incident, Dr Mohammad Abu Tayeb, chief medical officer of the university medical centre, said, "Due to symptoms of panic disorder and a potential risk of heart attack, we referred him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital."
