A Bangladeshi expatriate couple, Shahidul Hasan Sapon and Sabrina Ahmed Papri, lost their lives while attempting to save their daughter from drowning at the Walpole Beach in Western Australia on Saturday (28 December).

The couple had travelled to Walpole to spend the Christmas holiday with their family, reports local media.

Reports from local police and media sources indicate that the family was unaware of the strong tides at the beach.

While enjoying their time at the shore, the couple's young daughter, Siana, was swept away by the rising tide.

In an attempt to save their child, both Shahidul and Sabrina jumped into the deep sea, managing to rescue their daughter but unable to save themselves.

The bodies of the couple were later recovered by local police from the sea.

They are currently being kept at the morgue of a local hospital, with the authorities scheduled to hand over the bodies today.

Shahidul had completed his PhD from Curtin University in Perth and was working as an associate professor in the Urban Planning Department.

Both Shahidul and Sabrina were former students of the Urban and Regional Planning Department at Khulna University.
