Bangladesh steps up safety measures for embassy, diplomats, students in Tehran
The government expressed deep concern over the welfare of Bangladeshi citizens in the region, particularly in light of the recent escalation involving Iran.
The government of Bangladesh has initiated measures to ensure the safety and security of its embassy premises in Tehran, along with its diplomats, staff members and Bangladeshi students residing in Iran, amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (28 February), the government expressed deep concern over the welfare of Bangladeshi citizens in the region, particularly in light of the recent escalation involving Iran.
The suspension of air traffic and closure of airspace in parts of the Middle East have disrupted travel plans for Bangladeshi workers bound for the region.
The government said it has already requested relevant countries to allow stranded Bangladeshi citizens, including migrant workers, to enter once the situation improves. Assurances have been received from some countries in this regard.
Authorities in Bangladesh have also taken steps to support stranded workers at various airports across the country.
The statement noted that Bangladesh regrets the breakdown of negotiations and voiced concern over the latest escalation. It reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region.
Emphasising that conflict offers no lasting solution, the government said dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to international law remain the only viable path to resolving disputes. It urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation and resume diplomatic efforts immediately.
Bangladesh reaffirmed its longstanding position in favour of peace, stability and security in the Middle East and called on the international community to intensify efforts to restore calm and facilitate dialogue.
In the evening, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and the Foreign Secretary held an emergency meeting to assess the evolving situation.
They also spoke with the head of Bangladesh Mission in Tehran during the meeting.
