Bangladesh remains second highest source of foreign tourists for India
Notwithstanding the downturn in bilateral relations, Bangladesh remains the second highest source of foreign tourists for India with 17.50 lakh people from the eastern neighbour having visited this country in 2024.
According to data from the Bureau of Immigration cited by India's federal tourism ministry today (8 December), a total of 17,50, 165 tourists from Bangladesh travelled to India last year.
However, the tourist inflow from Bangladesh into India in 2024 was lower than in 2023 when 21,19,826 tourists had come to India.
In the year 2022, a total of 12,77,557 tourists from Bangladesh visited India.
Bangladesh has retained the second highest foreign tourist source for India for the last five years, as per the data.
The United States was the top foreign tourist source for India in 2024 as 18,04, 586 people visited the country.
Among the Indian states, West Bengal was one of the most favourite destinations of foreign tourists in 2023 and 2024 with 27,06,942 people and 31,24,462 people respectively.
The highest number of foreign tourists was recorded by the western state of Maharashtra with the figures of 33,87,739 in 2023 and 37,05170 in 2024.
India earned Rs 2,93,033 crore from a total of 205.09 crore foreign tourists last year.
