Bangladesh Railway must become profitable, service-oriented: Minister Rabiul

The government no longer wants Bangladesh Railway to remain a loss-making entity and plans to restructure it into a profitable and service-oriented institution, Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said today (19 February).
He made the remarks at an exchange meeting with officials of the ministry and Bangladesh Railway at Rail Bhaban in the capital, where he attended as the chief guest.
The minister said, "Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has placed special emphasis on developing the railway sector and improving passenger services. The BNP's election manifesto pledged to revitalise railways as the central backbone of national transport."
Rabiul said the prime minister has instructed authorities to prevent ticket black marketing, curb corruption and enhance service quality. He also directed officials to ensure smooth and hassle-free train journeys for passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
The minister asked relevant authorities to prepare a feasible action plan within 180 days to implement the commitments outlined in the party's election manifesto. He further instructed officials to explore ways to reduce travel time on the Dhaka-Chattogram route within a week and take necessary measures accordingly.
State Ministers Habibur Rashid and Md Rajib Ahsan from the ministries of road transport and bridges, railways and shipping were present as special guests.
The meeting, chaired by Railways Secretary Md Fahimul Islam, was attended by Bangladesh Railway Director General Md Afzal Hossain and other senior officials.
