Bangladesh Navy ship 'Prottaya' departs Chattogram for International fleet review in Colombo
The International Fleet Review will bring together warships, delegations, and observers from various countries
Bangladesh Navy ship Prottaya left Chattogram on Wednesday (20 November) to participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) in Colombo, organised by the Sri Lankan Navy as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations. The multinational maritime event will take place from 27 to 30 November.
According to the Bangladesh Navy, the contingent includes 29 officers and a total of 150 sailors aboard Prottaya, commanded by Captain Touhidul Haque Bhuiyan.
A departure ceremony was held at the Chattogram Naval Berth, where Commander of the Chattogram Naval Area Rear Admiral Md Moinul Hasan attended as chief guest and delivered guidance-oriented remarks to the personnel. Senior naval officers and family members of the departing crew were also present, according to a press release.
As per naval tradition, the ship was formally seen off with ceremonial music performed by the navy band.
The International Fleet Review will bring together warships, delegations, and observers from various countries. The event is regarded as an important platform for strengthening maritime security cooperation, particularly in efforts to combat piracy, drug and arms trafficking, human smuggling, and illegal fishing. It will also help advance collaboration in humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and wider multilateral naval engagement.
Bangladesh Navy has previously taken part in several international fleet reviews, showcasing its professionalism and bolstering defence diplomacy through joint exercises, training, and coordinated operations with friendly nations.
Officials expressed hope that the visit will deepen Bangladesh's naval diplomacy and enhance the professional skills of Prottaya's crew. The ship is scheduled to return to Chattogram on 5 December.
