Bangladesh Navy ship arrives in Yangon with 120 tonnes of relief supplies

Bangladesh Navy ship 'BNS Somudra Avijan' carrying the second phase of humanitarian assistance items for the earthquake-affected people of Myanmar arrived in Yangon.
The ship delivered more than 120 tonnes of relief items including 75.5 tonnes of dry food, hygiene kits, water, tents and some emergency items, said a press release received today (12 April).
Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar M Monwar Hossain handed over the relief materials to the Chief Minister of the Yangon Region, U Soe Thein, at a ceremony at the MITT jetty, Yangon this morning.

In his brief remarks, Ambassador Hossain stated that Bangladesh, as a responsible neighbor and a champion in disaster management and preparedness, stood by the earthquake-affected people of Myanmar without any delay.
The ambassador acknowledged the efforts of the members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces for delivering relief supplies and humanitarian support, including rescue activities and medical services, to the Myanmar people from 1 April to 10 April in Naypyidaw.
He thanked the captain of BNS Somudra Avijan and the crew members for delivering the vital relief materials to Yangon. He also mentioned Bangladesh's recent humanitarian support to Myanmar during natural disasters, including Cyclone Mocha in 2023.
The ambassador also handed over 800 boxes of hygiene kits to members of the executive committee of Myanmar Red Cross.
This is the largest consignment of relief supplies sent by Bangladesh to the quake-affected people of Myanmar this year.
Earlier in the first phase, two consignments were delivered on 30 March and 1 April with 16.5 tonnes and 15 tonnes of relief materials respectively.
Three Bangladesh Air Force C-130J aircraft and two Bangladesh Army CASA aircraft delivered those materials to Yangon and Naypyidaw, along with a 55-member search and rescue team.
Myanmar government officials, Brigadier General Md Aftab Hossain, other diplomats of the Embassy, and the captain and crew of the ship were at the handing over ceremony.
