Bangladesh to introduce data classification under Personal Data Protection Act: Taiyeb
Bangladesh is set to incorporate data classification into its Personal Data Protection Act, said Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb.
Data components used to identify individuals will be classified separately, said the special assistant to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology at a seminar titled "Trends of Disinformation in Bangladesh's Media", organised by the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) on Saturday.
He added that the goal is to ensure that Personal Identification Information (PII) is stored within the country, preventing it from being transferred abroad.
According to him, confidential information such as health records and financial data can only be used under specific conditions and through a transparent process.
Other data such as images, videos, or audio can be stored anywhere following proper mapping, but storage of PII must remain within Bangladesh, he added.
Taiyeb also noted that the Cyber Security Ordinance brings all AI-generated content within the purview of cyberspace regulations, making them subject to legal action if necessary.
PIB Director Faruk Wasif said, "Over the past 15 years, the state itself became a factory of falsehoods, and the media turned into its supporter."
During the seminar, a research paper was presented by Mamunur Rashid, a consultant for the Bangladesh Computer Council's EBLICT project, which focuses on enhancing the use of the Bengali language in information technology through research and development.
