Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) is taking the initiative to rename "Bangabandhu Satellite-1", the country's first satellite to be launched into space, as "Bangladesh Satellite-1" (BS-1).

Additionally, the state-owned company has also initiated the process of renaming several establishments previously named after Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

When asked about the decision, BSCL spokesperson Omar Haider said, "The renaming initiative follows a decision from the Advisory Council of the interim government and will be formalised through an official notification once the necessary procedures are completed."

An earlier decision from a council meeting directed all ministries and departments to take necessary measures to revoke the naming of state institutions and establishments associated with individuals linked to the "fascist" Awami League government, following the mass uprising led by students that toppled the regime.

According to BSCL sources, the company has already sent a letter to the Posts and Telecommunications Division regarding the name change.

Additionally, the Sajeeb Wazed Satellite Ground Station in Gazipur and Sajeeb Wazed Satellite Ground Station in Betbunia will be renamed to their original founding names: Primary Satellite Ground Station, Gazipur, and Secondary Satellite Ground Station, Betbunia.

Earlier, Bangladesh launched this satellite on 11 May 2018.
