Banana-tree raft race draws thousands in Kushtia
For many spectators, the event offered a rare opportunity to experience a form of rural entertainment that is seldom seen nowadays.
Thousands of people of all ages have gathered along both banks of the Boruria canal in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia to watch an unusual rural spectacle – a banana-tree raft race.
Unlike conventional boat races, the competitors took to the water on rafts made of banana trees, turning the canal into a colourful and lively arena.
A total of 16 teams took part in the two-day competition, with four participants on each raft, beginning on Friday (25 September) and concluding with the final yesterday (26 September).

Organised by the Choraikol Hoytapara Youth Community in Nandolalpur Union, the event aimed to revive lost rural traditions and offer healthy entertainment to local communities.
The final, held from noon to evening on Saturday, drew a huge crowd along both banks of the canal as the teams battled for the championship.
In the closely contested final, Jhankar Express emerged champion after defeating Tamim Decorator. Gram Bangla Express finished third, while Bhai Bhai Express secured fourth place.
The winners received traditional prizes after the race. The champion team was awarded a large goat, while the runner-up received a smaller goat.

"I have watched boat races before, but I had never seen a raft race like this. I really enjoyed it, and my son, who came with me, was also very happy," said Selina Begum, one of the spectators.
Mohammad Aktaruzzaman, in his 60s, said it was the first time such a banana-tree raft race had been held in his village.
"We all had a lot of fun. I hope such an event will be organised every year," he said.
Abu Kawsar Apu, a member of the organising committee, said they arranged the event to provide some entertainment for local people and revive a rural tradition.
"The large turnout of men and women from the area made the event a success. We will continue organising such events in the future," he said.
The colourful race not only entertained thousands of spectators but also brought people together around a traditional form of rural recreation, organisers and locals said.
