A large number of agitated rickshaw-pullers continue their blockade programme at important points of Pragati Sarani in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, protesting ban on rickshaw plying on three major routes.
But a section of protesters went off streets from Rampura area.

Commuters suffer as rickshaw-pullers' protests gather momentum

They withdraw their demonstration as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured them of meeting their demand, Rampura Rickshaw Owners’ Association President Dulal Mia and Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League Secretary General Kazi Md Johirul Kayum told The Business Standard.

Protesting rickshaw-pullers alleged that a politically-motivated group left streets, saying the PM has promised to fulfil their demand.
“We have not received any such assurance yet, so we will continue the protest.”

Local Ward Commission Liakat requested the protesters to leave streets as no one will stop them from plying of rickshaws from now, said Md Kuddus, officer-in-charge of Rampura Police Station.

Earlier in the morning, rickshaw-pullers blocked important roads of Pragati Sarani, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the roads.

Thousands of rickshaw-pullers and owners took to streets and started demo at different points in front of Jamuna Future Park, Bashundhara residential area’s gate, Norda, Gulshan Notun Bazar, Badda, Middle Badda, Merul Badda, Rampura Bridge, Rampura Bazar, Malibagh, Mugda para, Khilgaon Bishwa Road, Maniknagar, Malibagh and Sayedabad.

At a meeting on July 3, a special committee, headed by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon, imposed a ban plying of rickshaws on three major thoroughfares from July 7, in an effort to ease the growing traffic congestion.

The three roads are Kuril-Sayedabad road via Rampura and Khilgaon, Gabtoli to Azimpur via Asad Gate and Science Laboratory intersection to Shahbagh intersection.
