Balancing power, building inclusive economy key challenges for new govt: Zonayed Saki
Without structural economic reforms, ordinary citizens will not experience real change,” he said while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat today
State Minister for Finance and Planning Zonayed Saki has identified the main challenges facing the new government as establishing a balance of power, ensuring accountability and building an inclusive economic system.
"Political change alone is not enough; democratisation of the economy is equally necessary. Without structural economic reforms, ordinary citizens will not experience real change," he said while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat today (18 February).
Following the swearing-in of the newly formed government, ministers are taking up their responsibilities with seriousness, he said.
"We have reached this stage through continuous joint movements. In the anti-fascist struggle, 39 parties, including the Ganosamhati Andolon and the Ganatantra Mancha, worked together. In line with this continuity, we contested elections together and aim to use the opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh, won through the sacrifice of martyrs," Saki said.
He emphasised that the movement was based on a clear 31-point political, economic and social agenda. This included guidance on dismantling fascist structures and establishing a democratic state through power balance and accountability.
Highlighting the challenges, Saki said, "Finance ministry, as the country's central policy-making hub, must develop highly efficient institutions."
He also noted that the economic crisis of the past year and a half has been largely mitigated, and the focus now should be on developing an economy characterised by broad investment, job creation and reduced inequality.
He also pointed out that combating corruption remains a top responsibility of the ministry.
Saki argued against the "trickle-down" model of growth, emphasising that increasing income and purchasing power of ordinary citizens strengthens the internal market, forming the foundation of the national economy.
He expressed hope that the finance minister's experience and expertise will guide the country's economy forward, with all leaders contributing their skills toward success.
