Auto-rickshaw driver beaten to death in Sonargaon over refusing to pay Tk10 as extortion
The accused has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
An auto-rickshaw driver has died after being beaten by extortionists for refusing to pay an extra Tk10 in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Momin died this morning (20 May) while undergoing treatment. He was the son of Abdul Hakim of Nazirpur area in Sonargaon upazila.
Following news of Momin's death, local residents and relatives of the deceased blocked the Dhaka- Chattogram highway, demanding justice and the arrest of those responsible.
Police from Sonargaon Police Station later went to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon Police Station, said, "Legal proceedings are underway and efforts to arrest the accused are continuing."
According to relatives and local sources, the incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the Darikandi bus stand area. A local lineman Shahin, had collected Tk10 as extortion from Momin. Shortly afterwards, Shahin demanded money from him again.
When Momin refused to pay the second time, Shahin repeatedly struck Momin on the head with a stick, leaving him critically injured and unconscious on the spot.
Locals rescued him and took him to a hospital in Dhaka, where he remained under treatment for two days before succumbing to his injuries this morning.
The accused has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
