Prothom Alo, Daily Star, Chhayanaut attacks are threat to education, culture: Rasheda K Chowdhury
She added that the situation could have been prevented if the government had taken strong action earlier, particularly during the HSC auto-pass protests that resulted in all HSC candidates being given an auto pass in 2024.
Former adviser to a caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury has said the recent attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo, The Daily Star and Chhayanaut are not only an assault on freedom of speech but also a direct attack on education and culture.
Speaking at a joint protest at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka today (22 December), organised by the Editors' Council and Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (Noab), against recent mob attacks on the Prothom Alo and Daily Star offices, she said attacks on religious minorities should not be described as mob violence, rather they should be called anarchy.
She added that the situation could have been prevented if the government had taken strong action earlier, particularly during the HSC auto-pass protests that resulted in all HSC candidates being given an auto pass in 2024.
According to her, failure to act decisively at that time contributed to the current state of lawlessness.
