Attack on Hasnat: 43 shown arrested in attempted murder case in Gazipur
Earlier in the day, police said 54 people were detained in a special drive following the attack

Among the 54 people detained in Gazipur following an attack on the vehicle carrying Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (Southern Region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), police have shown arrested 43 individuals in an attempted murder case.
Confirming the matter, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) Mohammad Zahidul Hasan said NCP activist Al Amin Khandaker filed the case on behalf of Hasnat at Basan Police Station this afternoon (5 May).
The case was filed against 43 named accused and more than a hundred unidentified accused.
The accused in the case include former minister and district Awami League president AKM Mozammel Haque, former state minister Zahid Ahsan Russell, former mayor Jahangir Alam, former MP Iqbal Hossain Sabuj and former state minister Rumana Ali Tusi.
Earlier in the day, police said 54 people were detained in a special drive following the attack, which took place around 7pm yesterday in the Chandana intersection area of the city.
"A special drive was conducted in various parts of the city overnight, leading to the detentions," said Zahidul Hasan.
"Of them, 43 were shown arrested in the Hasnat Abdullah attack case. The rest were shown arrested in other cases. All of them were sent to jail through the court."
Yesterday evening, Hasnat's vehicle came under attack while returning to Dhaka after attending an event in Tangail. The vehicle was vandalised and Hasnat sustained injuries to his arm during the attack.
According to police, on the way, when his car reached the Gazipur metropolitan intersection area, the car slowed down, probably due to traffic congestion. Then some individuals came on a motorcycle, attacked his car and quickly fled.
"After the incident, Hasnat's vehicle headed towards Dhaka. As it reached the Board Bazar area near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), students from the university came forward to ensure his safety. Hasnat got out of the car there and spoke with the students. Gazipur Metropolitan Police officials also arrived at the scene shortly after," said Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Taherul Haque Chauhan.
"Our officials spoke to Hasnat at the Board Bazar area. Later, arrangements were made for him to go to Dhaka under police protection," Taherul added.
