Asif Nazrul praises army’s respect for ICT process, respect for rule of law shown by accused officers

Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul has said the way army personnel appeared before the International Crimes Tribunal today (22 October) and the manner in which they were taken there reflects a strong respect for the judicial process.
In response to questions from journalists this afternoon at the Secretariat, the adviser praised the cooperation shown by the senior officials of the military, including the army chief, noting it is highly commendable.
The respect they have demonstrated for the rule of law is being viewed very positively, he added.
When asked why they were kept in a sub-jail or where the 15 army officers facing three war crimes cases would be held, the law adviser said such decisions were entirely under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
"They will do whatever they consider necessary and appropriate. I do not have the authority to answer this," he added.
Fifteen current and former army officers, ordered to be sent to jail in three cases filed over enforced disappearances, killings and other crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the Awami League government's tenure, were sent to a sub-jail inside Dhaka Cantonment under heavy security today.
Earlier this morning (22 October), the International Crimes Tribunal-1 ordered them to be sent to jail.
Following the hearing, their lawyer, Major (Retd) Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, said they will be kept in the cantonment sub-jail for the time being.
