Salma Choudhury, the founder and chairperson of ASHIC - A Foundation for Childhood Cancer, passed away this morning (24 January).

Salma breathed her last at 5:01am local time at the MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai, India, where she was undergoing cancer treatment, according to Salma's daughter Maheen Hamid, who serves as a trustee and director of International Relations at ASHIC.

ASHIC, which is an abbreviation for A Shelter For Helpless Ill Children, was established in memory of Salma and Afzal Husain Choudhury's three-year-old son Ashiq Husain Choudhury, who died from cancer on 20 May 1993 while receiving treatment in London.
