Army reiterates zero tolerance against mob violence, says ready to take stricter action
According to the army, law enforcers initially urged both sides to disperse peacefully and resolve their differences within the framework of the law

Reaffirming the government's zero tolerance stance on mob violence, the Bangladesh Army has said it remains committed to taking a tough position against any such unrest in order to ensure public security and restore confidence among citizens.
The army reiterated this position in a statement posted on its Facebook page today (30 August) around 12:29am, saying it stands ready to take stricter action if required.
The statement followed violent clashes between activists of Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad in Dhaka's Kakrail area around 8pm yesterday (29 August), which left several people injured. Police were initially deployed to control the situation but later sought army assistance as the violence escalated.
According to the army, law enforcers initially urged both sides to disperse peacefully and resolve their differences within the framework of the law.
"However, despite repeated appeals, some activists ignored the calls, engaged in mob violence, and carried out organised attacks on security personnel," the statement read.
The statement added that by around 9pm, the violence intensified further when protesters held a torch procession, hurled brickbats, and attempted to set fire to different structures. Public movement in Bijoynagar, Naya Paltan, and surrounding areas was severely disrupted. At least five army personnel were reported injured, it said.
The army is dedicated to upholding law and order, safeguarding public safety, and maintaining peace, the statement further added.
