Army ready to assist govt in holding free, fair polls: General Waker
“The country is heading towards elections. The army has made all necessary preparations to support the government in holding a free and neutral election,” he said at an ‘Officers' Address’ held at Dhaka Cantonment this morning.

The Bangladesh Army is fully prepared to assist the government in ensuring a free, fair, and impartial national election, Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman said today (19 August).
"The country is heading towards elections. The army has made all necessary preparations to support the government in holding a free and neutral election," he said at an 'Officers' Address' held at Dhaka Cantonment this morning, according to media reports.
Senior army officials were present at the event, while officers from all military establishments joined virtually.
General Waker noted that army personnel have been deployed in the field for an extended period, longer than in the past.
"You must maintain good relations with everyone. If there is distance, it must be removed," he told officers. "You are the future of the country. You must be inspired by patriotism and uphold the chain of command."
Responding to recent criticisms directed at the army, he said there was no reason to be upset.
"Those making such remarks are young, like our children. They will understand their mistakes as they grow older and will feel ashamed," he added.
Emphasising professionalism, the army chief said, "The army is a professional force. While on duty, you must demonstrate professionalism. You cannot be involved in any act of retaliation."
Without naming individuals, he said an allegation against a soldier for having links with a political party is under investigation.
"If proven, action will be taken. No army member is allowed to be involved in political activities," he said.
General Waker also mentioned another inquiry into an officer accused of violence against women, reiterating that there would be zero tolerance for moral misconduct.
"But no one will be punished based on media trials; action will be taken only if allegations are proven," he clarified.
Addressing senior officers, the army chief said the state invests heavily in developing an army officer. "Therefore, preventive measures must be taken so that no one becomes involved in crimes. Sending them home after committing offences is nothing but a waste of the state's resources," he added.
