Army officer under investigation after 'secret meeting' of banned AL; court of inquiry formed
His detention followed allegations of political involvement reported to the Bangladesh Army by a law enforcement agency

Bangladesh Army has launched an investigation and formed a court of inquiry against one of its officers following allegations of political involvement linked to a recent 'secret meeting' involving members of the banned Awami League and Chhatra League.
The accused officer, identified as Major Sadique, was detained on 17 July from his residence in Dhaka's Uttara area, according to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
His detention followed allegations of political involvement reported to the Bangladesh Army by a law enforcement agency.
To ensure a fair and impartial investigation, the Army has formed a court of inquiry. Initial findings suggest the allegation has merit. Upon completion of the full investigation, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken under military law and regulations, says the press release
Bangladesh Army is also coordinating with the Bangladesh Police and other law enforcement agencies. A second court of inquiry has been formed to investigate the officer's unauthorised absence from duty. Necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings under the provisions of command responsibility, the press release added.
Earlier, on 8 July, police arrested 22 individuals from a convention centre in the capital's Bashundhara area. The group included leaders and activists of the banned Awami League, Chhatra League, and affiliated organisations.
According to police, the gathering was attended by 300 to 400 people, involved anti-government slogans and discussions about launching a campaign to create unrest.
The plan was to occupy the Shahbag intersection and create unrest and fear among the public, paving the way for Hasina's return
Police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Bhatara Police Station. Investigators later identified Major Sadique as being connected to the meeting.
Bangladesh Army concluded the press release reiterating its commitment to professionalism, discipline and constitutional responsibility. It stated that there is no room for political affiliation in the Army and that any such activity will be dealt with strictly under military law.
