Arakan Army allegedly abducts 5 Bangladeshi fishermen from Naf river

Members of Myanmar's Arakan Army have allegedly abducted five Bangladeshi fishermen from the Naf river near Shah Porir Dwip in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf.
Abdus Salam, a member of Sabrang Union Parishad, said the incident occurred yesterday afternoon (7 October).
Lieutenant Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of the 2nd Battalion of BGB in Teknaf, said local representatives and the families of the fishermen reported the incident.

"It is believed that the area in Myanmar where this took place is under the control of the Arakan Army due to ongoing conflicts within Myanmar. Consequently, we assume that the Arakan Army members are the ones who have abducted the fishermen," he said.
Mohiuddin said negotiations are underway to secure the fishermen's return.
The missing fishermen have been identified as Md Alam, 22, Md Rasel Mia, 23, Md Saiful Mia, 17, Borhan Uddin, 19, and Md Rashed, 24.
UP member Abdus Salam said although the fishermen were abducted yesterday, the incident only became known this afternoon.
"The families of the fishermen said armed members of the Arakan Army captured them while they were fishing on the Naf River on a boat and were taken towards Myanmar," he said.
