Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani, chief of outlawed Islamist organisation Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), has been freed on bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He was released from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail around 11:15am today, Jailor Muhammad Lutfor Rahman told The Business Standard.

"The bail order reached the jail this morning. The papers were scrutinised and he was subsequently released," Lutfor added.

According to sources, there were four cases filed against Jasim. Among those, three cases have been withdrawn.

The other case against him was filed on 6 February 2008 with the Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He secured bail in that case from the Metropolitan Magistrate Court yesterday.

Jasim Uddin hails from Khajurtola village of Barguna sadar upazila.

He was arrested from Barguna on 12 August 2013 in a case filed with Pallabi Police Station over the killing of blogger and activist Rajib Haider.

Rajib was hacked to death in front of his house in the Palashnagar area of Pallabi in the capital on the night of 15 February 2013.

A Dhaka court sentenced Jasim to five years in prison in the murder case.

Meanwhile, in May 2015, the government banned ABT for its militant and anti-state activities in the country.

The group had claimed responsibility for the murders of atheist bloggers and writers Avijit Roy, Oyasiqur Rahman Babu, and Ananta Bijoy Das, and the murder of Rajshahi University sociology professor AKM Shafiul Islam.
