Another 60,000 tonnes of US wheat arrive as ambassador visits Ctg Port
The embassy said the shipment is part of a larger consignment of more than 173,000 metric tonnes of US wheat.
A major consignment of US wheat arrived at Chattogram Port today (26 January), underscoring growing commercial cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States, as US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen visited the port to mark the shipment's arrival.
The development was confirmed in a press release issued by the US Embassy in Dhaka, which said the visit coincided with the unloading of nearly 60,000 metric tonnes of high-quality US wheat at the port.
It noted that the shipment is part of a larger consignment exceeding 173,000 metric tonnes, including almost 115,000 metric tonnes of soft white wheat sourced from Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and nearly 60,000 metric tonnes of hard red winter wheat from Montana and Nebraska.
The embassy said the shipments together represent a critical supply of high-protein, nutritious grain, as Bangladesh produces only about 13% of its wheat consumption annually.
The deliveries also reflect Bangladesh's expanding role as an important market for US agricultural exports, it added.
According to the US Embassy, under a July 2025 memorandum of understanding with the US Wheat Association to purchase up to 700,000 metric tonnes of US wheat annually until 2030, Bangladesh has so far bought around 660,000 metric tonnes in three deals through international commodity trader AgroCorp, with more than 350,000 metric tonnes already delivered, supporting US farmers while ensuring a stable supply of nutritious wheat for Bangladesh.
Ambassador Christensen was joined by Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman and Food Secretary Md Firoz Sarker during the visit.
