Alleged international wildlife trafficker held with 13 green parrots in Ctg

The Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division of the Forest Department has arrested an alleged international wildlife trafficker and rescued 13 green parrots during a raid in Hathazari, Chattogram.
The arrested man, Md Saddam, 35, also known as Jewel and Juglu, is a resident of Paschim High Level Road in the Lalkhan Bazar area under Khulshi Police Station in Chattogram.
Chattogram Forest Department Wildlife Ranger Md Lutfor Parvez confirmed the arrest to The Business Standard today (27 July).

He said the raid was launched after investigators obtained information about Juglu's alleged hideout and warehouse during the interrogation of Shafiqul Islam, who was arrested on 24 July.
Acting on the instructions of Divisional Forest Officer ANM Yasin Newaz, a special team from the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division conducted intelligence surveillance in the area.
With assistance from volunteers of the Nature Conservation Alliance Bangladesh (NCA), the team kept watch at the weekly pigeon market in Hathazari and allegedly caught Juglu red-handed while selling 10 green parrots at around 4pm.
The suspect was then taken to his alleged warehouse, where officials recovered three more green parrots, bringing the total number of rescued birds to 13.
Lutfor Parvez said no other wildlife was recovered during the operation.
Following his arrest, Juglu was taken to the Forest Department office for questioning before a case was filed against him under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) (Amendment) Act, 2026.
He was later produced before the Forest Court, which ordered that he be sent to Chattogram Jail.
According to the Forest Department, Juglu is a listed offender in the wildlife trafficking network operating in the Chattogram region.
"We believe he controls a significant portion of wildlife trafficking in this region. He also has links with international wildlife trafficking networks," Lutfor Parvez said.
He added that Juglu had previously been named in another wildlife trafficking case but had evaded arrest and remained under surveillance.
The Forest Department also said it has information suggesting the suspect maintained contact with several members of an international wildlife trafficking network, including Hadis and Shafiqul.
Officials said efforts are continuing to verify the information and identify and arrest other members of the trafficking syndicate.
