A local Sramik League leader, who was waiting for trial in a July uprising murder case, passed away today (10 January) in Gazipur District Jail.

The deceased has been identified as Sheikh Zahirul Islam, 46, son of Mojibur Rahman of Mawna area in Sreepur of Gazipur, said jail authorities.

"Zahirul was suffering from diabetes and cardiovascular disease. On Friday afternoon, he reported feeling chest pain at around 4:20pm. We immediately admitted him to the hospital inside the jail. After administering primary treatment there, he was transferred to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital at 4:40pm. He was declared dead by the on-duty doctor there," said the jail's Jailer Md Rafiqul Quader.

He noted that the exact cause of Zahirul's death will be known soon after receiving the post-mortem report.

However, Tajuddin Medical's Resident Doctor Sheikh Farhad, who attended Zahirul, said he could have died from a cardiac arrest.

He also noted that there was no injury markes on the deceased's body.

Zahirul was the general secretary of Sreepur Sramik League.
