The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) quizzed Lakshmipur-2 constituency lawmaker Md Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul's wife Selina Islam and his sister-in-law Jasmin Prodhan over allegations of amassing illegal wealth and laundering money by him.

A team led by Md Salahuddin, deputy director of ACC, questioned the duo for one and a half-hour at the commission's Segunbagicha office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

After that, Selina Islam, also an independent Member of the Parliament in reserved seat, claimed that the allegations of corruption against his husband and family members are baseless.

"It is a conspiracy. We are not engaged in corruption and did not earn any illegal wealth. The wealth we have earned with hard work and dedication all the past years in Kuwait," she told the reporters.

On July 12, ACC summoned Selina Islam and her sister to appear before it on July 22.

Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti prosecution department extended the imprisonment of MP Kazi Papul till July 28 and set the date for further hearing, Ataul Gani, general secretary of Kuwait unit Awami League, told The Business Standard.

Earlier on June 25, Papul was sent to the central prison of Kuwait on human trafficking and money laundering charges.

The court concerned and the Public Prosecution of Kuwait looked into the cases of money laundering, human trafficking, corruption and real estate fraud, reports Arab Times daily quoting reliable judicial sources.

The Attorney General, Counselor Dhirar Al-Asousi, ordered the detention of the Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Education and Training Affairs, Major-General Mazen Al-Jarrah, who is a suspect in the case of Papul for another 21 days in Central Prison, it added.

Informed sources told the daily the number of accused in the case so far is seven.
