Abrar murder: Death-row convict Jamie escaped by breaking prison wall, says jail authority
Among the 22 individuals convicted in the Abrar murder case, 21 are currently in jail, authorities say

Muntasir Al Jamie, convicted in the murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad, escaped from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail on 6 August by breaking through the prison wall, the Department of Prisons said today (25 February).
Jamie was among 203 inmates, including 87 death-row prisoners, who fled that day, said a press release signed by Jannatul Farhad, assistant inspector general of Department of Prisons.
To address public concerns, the release clarified that a case regarding the escape was filed with Konabari Police Station in Gazipur on 15 August.
According to the media release, authorities have since recaptured 51 inmates, including 35 death row convicts. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining fugitives, including Jamie.
The prison department noted that among the 22 individuals convicted in the Abrar murder case, 21 are currently in jail.
On Monday, Abrar Faiyaj, younger brother of Abrar Fahad, posted on his Facebook profile that his family was informed about the matter when Jamie's lawyer did not turn up in court.
Jamie, also an expelled member of the banned BCL's Buet unit, was sentenced to death in 2021 among 20 other Buet students for killing Abrar in 2019. Five others were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Abrar, a second-year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was beaten to death by a group of now-banned Chhatra League activists at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on 7 October 2019.
Meanwhile, the High Court is set to deliver its verdict any day on the death references and appeals of the convicts in the Abrar murder case.
