80 NCP leaders write to Nahid Islam backing potential alliance
According to the letter, the signatories, who hold central-level responsibilities within the NCP, said they were placing their views in the interest of safeguarding the party’s ideology, objectives and long-term strategic direction
At least 80 leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) have written a letter to party Convener Nahid Islam expressing their support for an alliance or seat-sharing arrangement that the party leadership may decide to pursue ahead of the upcoming polls.
The development comes after 30 NCP leaders submitted a memorandum opposing the party's reported move to form an alliance with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led eight-party coalition.
Confirming the matter on Saturday night (27 December), NCP member Yahia Jisan said the letter was submitted to consolidate the party's organisational position and to show respect for its internal decision-making process.
According to the letter, the signatories, who hold central-level responsibilities within the NCP, said they were placing their views in the interest of safeguarding the party's ideology, objectives and long-term strategic direction.
The letter noted that with the upcoming national parliamentary election in view, timely and strategic political decisions are crucial for rebuilding democratic institutions, ensuring sustainable reforms and establishing a people-oriented and accountable state system.
The signatories made it clear that if the NCP, considering party interests, national interests and the broader goal of democratic transition, decides to enter into an electoral understanding or alliance with any political party or coalition, they fully support and consent to such a decision.
They also expressed clear support and confidence in any alliance-related or electoral agreement decisions taken by the convener and member secretary based on recommendations from the party's executive council.
"We believe that under your leadership and political wisdom, the NCP will reach a timely, acceptable and united decision that will strengthen the party organisationally and further solidify public trust," the letter said.
The leaders further urged Nahid Islam to take necessary and appropriate decisions in light of the prevailing political context.
Among the signatories are NCP Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, Joint Conveners Javed Rasin and Mahbuda Alam Mitu, Joint Chief Organiser Ali Naser Khan, along with several other central leaders.
Earlier in the day, 30 NCP leaders formally objected to the party's reported move to forge an electoral alliance with the Jamaat-e-Islami-led eight-party coalition.
They submitted a memorandum titled "Principled objections to a potential alliance in light of the accountability of the July Uprising and party values" to Convener Nahid Islam.
Confirming that development, Mushfiq Us Saleheen, the first signatory to the memorandum and NCP joint member secretary, told The Business Standard that the document had been submitted to the party leadership.
