An eight-year-old girl was killed when the wall of her mud house collapsed due to continuous heavy rains in Patiya upazila of Chattogram.

The incident occurred at around 7am while Nijhum Akter, a third-grade student at Chatra Nomania Government Primary School, was sleeping.

Officer-in-Charge of Patiya Police Station Jasim Uddin confirmed the death and said police rushed to the scene but the family did not file a case over the incident.

The port city has been experiencing heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

The downpour, which intensified from last night, continued through Monday afternoon.

The Patenga Meteorological Office recorded 122.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 3pm on Monday.

Abdul Barek, a forecasting officer at the Patenga Meteorological Office, said the heavy rainfall is due to the formation of deep convective clouds associated with the low-pressure system.

"We have recorded about 123 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, which qualifies as very heavy rainfall. This weather pattern may persist for at least 48 more hours, increasing the risk of landslides," he added.

The rain caused significant waterlogging in low-lying areas of Chattogram, including Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Badurtala, Shulakbahar, Kapasgola, Chawkbazar, and Baklia.
