The Mongla Customs House put 70 high-end cars, which had been abandoned at the Mongla Port due to non-clearance by importers, up for auction on Monday.

In addition to submitting tenders at the Chattogram, Dhaka, Khulna, and Mongla customs houses, traders also placed bids online to purchase the cars at the auction.

According to Mongla Port officials, due to exceeding the designated 30-day time limit for storage in the yard and various sheds after importation at Mongla Port, 300 vehicles were handed over to Customs for auction last month.

Among them, 70 high-end cars, including Prado Land Cruiser, were put up for auction by Mongla Customs.

The tenders will be opened on 29 January, and after verification, a sale order will be issued to the highest bidders for the available cars, Mohammad Rubel Hasan, assistant commissioner of Mongla Customs House, told TBS.

Meanwhile, three Land Cruiser vehicles imported under duty-free privileges by former members of parliament were also put up for auction on 20 November. However, no sale order has been issued for these vehicles yet.

These cars were imported to Mongla Port in July of last year by Anupam Shahjahan Joy (former MP from Tangail-8), Muhammad Zakaria (former MP from Dinajpur-1), and Nasima Zaman Bobby (former MP from a reserved seat). All three are currently absconding.

According to the auction branch of Mongla Customs House, during the fiscal year 2023-24, Mongla Customs House conducted 14 auctions, putting 2,200 vehicles up for sale. However, only 200 vehicles were sold.
