Sixty-one more Biranganas, women who were tortured by the Pakistani forces during the liberation war, have been accorded Freedom Fighter (FFs) status through a gazette issued by the government on Monday.

With this, the number of Biranganas recognized as freedom fighters stands at 400.

They will be eligible for all government benefits provided to freedom fighters, including the monthly freedom fighters' allowance.
In 1972, following the independence of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman honored the women tortured during the liberation war, recognizing them as 'Birangana'.
The work of compensating and rehabilitating the women began under his direction.
However, with the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, the rehabilitation work came to a halt.
The current Awami League-led government decided to recognize the Biranganas as freedom fighters, reports Somoy news.
The National Freedom Fighters Council recognized them as freedom fighters on October 10, 2014.
The proposal was passed in the parliament on January 29 of the following year.
