5th day of appeal hearing on candidacy underway at EC
So far, 203 candidates have had their nominations restored following appeal hearings over the past four days.
The fifth day of appeal hearings on candidacy for the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections is underway.
The hearings began this morning (14 January) at 10am at the basement-2 auditorium of the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka, and are scheduled to continue until 5pm.
So far, 203 candidates have had their nominations restored following appeal hearings over the past four days.
Around 70 candidates are scheduled to have their appeals heard today. In the morning session, all four appeals submitted by the Communist Party of Bangladesh were accepted as valid.
Speaking to the media after the hearings, candidates said their nominations had initially been declared invalid due to complications related to signatures, but most were able to regain their candidacies following rulings by the Election Commission.
Appeal hearings will continue until 18 January. The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is 20 January. Returning officers will publish the final list of candidates and allocate electoral symbols on 21 January.
Election campaigning will begin on 22 January and may continue until 7:30am on 10 February.
Voting is scheduled to take place on 12 February, from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
