Some 50,000 people have been stranded in Mymensingh as rushes of water from upstream and incessant rainfall flooded at least five unions of the district's Haluaghat upazila today (4 October).
The water started to enter the unions in the afternoon, inundating roads, fields, yards and even the Upazila Health Complex premises, causing suffering to patients, local administration officials said.
"Incessant rainfall since Thursday led to an increase in river water levels. Alongside this, rushes of water from upstream in India flooded all villages in the Sadar, Bhubankura, Jugli, Gazirbhita and Kaichapur unions, stranding at least 50,000 residents. We hope the water will recede overnight if rainfall stops," Haluaghat Relief and Repatriation Officer Md Alal Uddin told The Business Standard.

"The dam on Bhogai River collapsed due to rising water levels, which increased the flooding," he added.
Suruj Mia, chairman of Bhubankura Union Parishad, said around noon today, water from Shewal and Meneng rivers also began to enter the locality.
According to Haluaghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ershadul Ahmed, Halughat did not experience any major flooding since 1988.
"However, since Friday evening, some unions have been flooded due to rainfall and rushes of upstream water. Relief will soon be provided to those affected," he added.
