At least 50,000 chickens along with machineries were burnt into ashes in a fire incident at Afil Layer Farm at Rupdia Ghoragachi area in Jashore Sadar upazila today (18 April).
The estimated loss from the fire is Tk20 crore, said farm officials.
Mamunur Rashid, assistant director of Jashore Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, "We are primarily suspecting that the fire might have been caused by an electric short circuit."
Mahbub Alam Lablu, director of Afil Group, said, "Among the 17 shades of Afil Layer Farm, one shade caught fire around 1:30pm. Upon receiving our call, five units of fire service reached the spot and extinguished the blaze after two hours of efforts."
"The shade that caught fire had 50,000 chickens. All of the chickens along with the machineries have been burnt in the fire. The estimated loss has been Tk20 crore. All of our shades are operated by automatic machines. All of these machines, including those for heat control, have been burnt," Mahbub added.
According to Afil Layer Farm officials, there are seven lakh chickens at 17 shades of the farm.
A total of four lakh eggs are produced from these shades, the farm officials added.
