5 injured as forest officials reportedly attacked during drive to free illegally occupied land in Savar

At least five individuals, including an official of the Forest Department, were injured in a reported attack during a drive to free illegally occupied forest land in Savar today (16 May).
The injured have been identified as forester Md Mohidur Rahman, forest guard Shahidullah Kaysar, Bozlur Rahman Bepari, Alauddin and Bappi Hossain.
The incident took place at Choto Kalikair area of Birulia in Savar at noon, according to the victims and the police.
Among the injured forester Mohidur suffered critical injuries.
"Two of the injured were brought to us. One of them had severe injuries on their arms and legs. We have referred him to a Dhaka hospital after primary treatment. Another injured was released after giving first aid," Savar Upazila Health Complex's Emergency Medical Officer Dr Lalima told The Business Standard.
Meanwhile, talking to TBS over the phone, injured forest guard Shahidulla said, "Before the Friday prayers at noon, a man named Lokman Hossain put up a signboard on a tree, claiming ownership of forest land near our beat office garden. He also erected a tin fence around the area.
"Later, at around 3:45pm, upon noticing the signboard and fence, Forester Mahidur Rahman and I went there to remove those. At that moment, seeing us through CCTV cameras, Lokman Hossain and his associates suddenly launched an attack on us with local weapons."
"During the attack, they struck Mahidur Rahman on the head," he added.
Shahidul said they were later rescued by locals and took them to Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
"As Mahidur Rahman's condition was critical, he was transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital," he said.
Shahidul further alleged that Lokman Hossain had longstanding disputes with the Forest Department. "He is accused in multiple cases, as he had previously occupied Forest Department land. He also owns a red oxide factory in that area."
When asked about the incident, Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Mia said, "We have received reports of an attack on Forest Department officials and employees. We have contacted the injured individuals, and they have informed us that they will file a complaint. Once the complaint is received, appropriate legal action will be taken."
TBS could not reach Lokman Hossain over the phone, despite repeated attempts, for a comment in this regard.
