At least six people, including a pregnant woman and children, drowned in separate incidents across three districts today (12 June).
Among the deceased, a pregnant woman and her daughter drowned in the Jamuna River at Banchamara area under Daulatpur upazila of the Manikganj district yesterday while they were bathing, reports BSS.
The victims were identified as Borsha Khatun, 20, a pregnant woman and daughter of Md Abdul Boyati, and Lamia Khatun, 10, daughter of Md Rahej Boyati - both residents of Banchamara Purbopara village under the upazila.
Locals said a group of people, including men and women, were bathing in the Jamuna river when a sudden strong current swept away six of them.
Four were rescued by the locals, but two went missing in the river.
On information, a team of firefighters from the Aricha Ghat Fire Service rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. However, the bodies could not be recovered till dusk.
"The rescue operation will resume today," said sources from the Fire Service.
Daulatpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahian Nuren told BSS that the Fire Service will continue searching for the missing bodies today. The upazila administration has also launched awareness campaigns through miking to caution locals about the dangerous parts of the river and ensure safety.
The bodies were yet to be found till the filing of this report at 12:35pm.
Madrasah student dies after drowning in pond in Ctg
A Madrasah student died after sinking in a pond at Jamiatul Mamur Jame Masjid pond in South Haidthkandi village under Mirsari upazila this afternoon, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Salahuddin, 14, son of Jahir Uddin, a seventh-grade student of Saheirkhali Habibia Dakhil Madrasa in Mirsari upazila.
Haitkandi Union Parishad member Masud Hossain confirmed the matter.
Imam Hossain, the deceased's maternal uncle, said that Salahuddin went to bathe in the pond next to the house this afternoon. At one stage, he drowned.
Unable to find him, family members and locals started searching, and his lifeless body was found floating in the pond.
5-year-old drowns, 7-year-old sister dies too while trying to save him
Meanwhile, two children drowned in a pond in Faridpur's Saltha upazila.
The children, aged five and seven years old, respectively, were siblings.
The siblings have been identified as Tanha Islam, 7, and Abu Talha, 5.
According to family and local sources, the five-year-old boy drowned first. His elder sister died while trying to save him.
They were rescued from the water and brought to Boalmari Upazila Health Complex around 12pm, where Dr Shakila Azad, the duty doctor of the emergency department, declared them dead on arrival.
"The two children had already died before being brought to the hospital. Even so, we confirmed it by doing an ECG. They are dead," said Dr Shakila Azad.
The two children lived with their mother at their father's maternal grandparents' home in Jamalpur village in Faridpur's Madhukhali upazila.
According to family and local sources, Tanha and Abu Talha went to Saltha with their mother yesterday (11 June) to visit their maternal grandparents.
Around 11am this morning, Abu Talha went to bathe in a pond beside the house with several other children. At that time, he drowned in the water.
When his sister Tanha saw this, she jumped into the water to save him, and also drowned. Family members rescued both of them from the water upon receiving the news and brought them to the Boalmari Upazila Health Complex, where they were declared dead.
Child's body recovered from Bangali river in Gaibandha
The body of a child was recovered from the Bangali river near Bishpukur area under Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district this afternoon.
The victim is identified as Tania, daughter of Tazinur Rahman, of the area.
Local sources said, Tania, along with her companions, went to the river this morning to take a bath this morning and drowned in the river. Despite searching, her body was not found in the spot because the water of the river swept downstream the body from the scene.
Being informed, the divers from Rangpur conducted a search and at one stage, they found the body downstream of the river this afternoon.
A pall of gloom descended in the area following the incident.
Officer in charge of Gobindaganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, Atitul Islam, confirmed the incident and urged the guardians to be more careful about their children.
Earlier yesterday (11 June), seven minors, including children and teenagers, drowned in separate locations across Narayanganj, Kishoreganj, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rangpur districts.
The rising number of drowning cases follows recent incidents on 9 June, where four people died — a man and his nephew in a family pond in Chattogram and a father and son while swimming in the sea at Cox's Bazar.
Besides, on 31 May, two sisters, both minors, drowned in a canal in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar upazila.
