5 die as car crashes into stationary truck on Faridpur expressway
Police said the car was travelling from Dhaka to Jashore when it rammed into the parked truck.
Five people, including a Bangladeshi expatriate who had returned from Malaysia after 10 years, were killed and two children injured when a car crashed into the rear of a stationary truck loaded with gas cylinders on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway in Faridpur's Bhanga upazila early today (2 June).
The accident occurred near the Maligram underpass. Police said the car was returning to Jashore from Dhaka when it rammed into the parked truck.
The deceased were identified as Malaysia returnee Ariful Islam, 25, his mother Nurjahan Begum, 50, his sister Ayesha Akter, 28, his brother Arif Hossain, 28, and the car driver Zahid Hossain, son of Md Islam of Gouripur village in Monirampur upazila.
The victims' homes are in Baliadanga village of Bakra union in Jashore's Jhikargachha upazila.
Two children injured in the crash – Ashraful Hossain, 8, and Tasfia, 3 – are undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. They are the children of Ayesha.
According to family members, Ariful had been living in Malaysia for the past 10 years. He returned to Bangladesh last night, and his relatives travelled to Dhaka airport to receive him.
While returning home from the airport, the vehicle carrying the family was involved in the accident.
Police said four people, including the driver, died at the scene, while three others were injured and taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.
Ariful, who was critically injured, was later referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. He was declared dead after being taken there, raising the death toll to five.
Shibchar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and said legal procedures were underway.
Faridpur Medical College Hospital emergency department physician Dr Abir said one person was brought to the hospital in critical condition and was later declared dead. The body was kept at the hospital morgue.
Police said the injured children remain under treatment.
Bhanga Fire Service Station Officer Abu Jafar said firefighters recovered four bodies from the scene and rescued three injured passengers.
"One of the injured later died after being taken to hospital," he said.
