426 killed, 813 injured in 392 road accidents in September: Road Safety Foundation

At least 426 people were killed and 813 others injured in 392 road accidents across the country in September, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

The report was prepared based on data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals, various electronic media, and its own data.

Vehicles involved in accidents: The statistics reveal that motorcycle riders and passengers accounted for 179 deaths (42%).

  • Bus passengers - 25 (5.86%)
  • Truck-pickup-van-tractor-trolley passengers - 22 (5.16%)
  • Private car-microbus-ambulance-jeep passengers - 24 (5.63%)
  • Three-wheeler passengers (e.g., easy bike, CNG, auto-rickshaw, auto-van, tempo, leguna) - 63 (14.78%)
  • Locally-made vehicle passengers (e.g., Nosimon, Korimon, Bhutbhuti, Alomshadhu, Mahindra) - 06 (1.40%)
  • Bicycle-pedal rickshaw riders - 10 (2.34%)

Types of roads:

  • 162 accidents (41.32%) occurred on national highways
  • 144 (36.73%) on regional roads
  • 47 (11.98%) on rural roads
  • 34 (8.67%) on urban roads
  • 5 (1.27%) in other locations

Types of accidents:

  • 82 (20.91%) were head-on collisions
  • 169 (43.11%) resulted from losing control
  • 94 (23.97%) involved pedestrians being hit
  • 41 (10.45%) involved vehicles being struck from behind
  • 6 (1.53%) occurred due to other reasons

Types of vehicles:

  • Trucks, covered vans, pickups, tractors, trolleys, lorries, drum trucks, cargo trucks, and tank lorries (28.48%)
  • Microbuses, private cars, ambulances, and jeeps (6%)
  • Passenger buses (15.50%)
  • Motorcycles (27.377%)
  • Three-wheelers (15.18%)
  • Locally-made vehicles (2.84%)
  • Bicycles and pedal rickshaws (2.05%)
  • Unidentified vehicles (2.53%).

Time of accidents:

  • early morning (5.10%)
  • Morning (26%)
  • Afternoon (18.62%)
  • Evening (14.79%)
  • Dusk (6.63%)
  • Night (28.82%)

Division-wise statistics:

  • Dhaka division: 31.63% of accidents, 30.04% of fatalities
  • Rajshahi division: 10.96% of accidents, 12.20% of fatalities
  • Chattogram division: 19.89% of accidents, 19% of fatalities
  • Khulna division: 12.24% of accidents, 14.78% of fatalities
  • Barishal division: 3.82% of accidents, 3.75% of fatalities
  • Sylhet division: 4.84% of accidents, 4.69% of fatalities
  • Rangpur division: 10.45% of accidents, 9.15% of fatalities
  • Mymensingh division: 6.12% of accidents, 6.33% of fatalities

Highest and lowest accident rates:

  • Highest accident rate: Dhaka division, with 124 accidents and 128 deaths.
  • Lowest accident rate: Barishal division, with 15 accidents and 16 deaths.
