At least four people were killed and five others were injured as lightning strikes hit them during thunderstorms in separate areas of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia today (9 October).

The deceased were identified as Awlad Hossain, 60, Nizam Hossain, 42, Tariqul Islam, 20, and Jahura Khatun, 40, said Daulatpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Khasruzzaman.

According to police and locals, the victims were working in a paddy field in the Garerpara village at noon when lightning struck them.

Locals rescued them and transported them to the Upazila Health Complex.

In a separate incident, a housewife named Jahura Khatun was struck by lightning while working near her home in Farakpur village.

She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Touhidul Islam Tuhin said nine people were brought to the hospital and four of them died before reaching the hospital.

"The condition of three of the injured was critical. They have been sent to Kushtia General Hospital for advanced treatment," he added.
