Four passengers of a battery-run auto-rickshaw were killed and several others injured after a bus rear-ended and crushed the three-wheeler in Mymensingh's Gouripur upazila in the early hours today (30 March).

All the deceased were members of one family, identified as Kulsuma Begum, 95, her daughter Dilruba, 40, Dilruba's daughters Riti Aktar, 14, and Priti Aktar, 7,  reports Prothom Alo quoting police.

The incident occurred in the upazila's Chandrapara intersection area of the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj regional highway at around 5:45am, police said.

The family was on its way to their village home at the upazila's Bhangnamari Union for Eid vacations.

According to police, the auto-rickshaw was completely crushed after a bus crashed into it from behind. Locals rescued and rushed seven people, including the three-wheeler's driver, to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared four dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident and fatalities, Additional Superintendent of Police (Gouripur Circle) Debashish Karmakar said the injured persons are receiving treatment at the hospital while necessary legal actions are being taken.

Meanwhile, another person was also killed after a minibus crashed into a roadside electric pole while trying to overtake a truck on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Bhaluka Upazila at around 7am today, police confirmed.
