310 more Bangladeshis return from Libya
The IOM provided each returnee with travel allowances, food supplies, and basic medical care upon arrival.
A total of 310 Bangladeshi nationals, who had been staying in Libya illegally, returned home today (5 December).
They were brought back to the country on a chartered flight that landed in Dhaka at 10am, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The repatriation was carried out through coordinated efforts by the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, with support from the Libyan authorities and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to officials, most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally with hopes of reaching Europe by sea, following the persuasion and assistance of human traffickers.
Many among them reported being abducted and subjected to torture at various stages during their stay in the North African nation. Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant government agencies, and the IOM received the repatriated citizens at the airport.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the returnees to share their harrowing experiences with others to raise awareness and prevent further exploitation by traffickers.
The IOM provided each returnee with travel allowances, food supplies, and basic medical care upon arrival.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi authorities, together with the embassy in Libya, the Expatriates' Welfare Ministry, and the IOM, continue to work jointly to ensure the safe repatriation of other Bangladeshi nationals currently detained in various Libyan detention centers, the foreign ministry said.
