300 sacks of VGF rice seized in Kushtia, 2 arrested

A mobile court in Kushtia's Mirpur upazila seized a truck carrying 15 tonnes (300 sacks) of rice meant for Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme, in an operation conducted in the Poradah New Market area yesterday (15 August).
According to local administration sources, the raid was carried out following a tip-off about the illegal transportation of government rice from Mymensingh to Kushtia.
Mirpur upazila Assistant Commissioner (AC Land), Kazi Md Meshkatul Islam, said, "We conducted the raid based on information about the smuggling of government rice. The detainees claimed the rice was being transported from Mymensingh to Kushtia through a businessman based in Ishwardi. However, the final destination of the rice has not yet been confirmed.''
"The concerned businessman has been contacted, and further legal action will be taken once he appears for questioning", Meshkatul added.

The estimated market value of the seized rice is approximately Tk8 lakh.
The truck driver and his assistant were taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the illegal transportation and handed over to the local police station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station, Md Shaikh Moinul Islam, added, "The seized truck and rice are currently in police custody. The driver and his assistant remain detained at the station. Legal action will be determined by the AC Land Meshkatul Islam."
