3 'pirates' held with firearms, ammunition in Cox’s Bazar
The detainees were planning to rob commercial vessels and fishing trawlers at sea
Bangladesh Coast Guard today (6 October) detained three suspected pirates with five locally made guns and 17 bullets in Chakaria of Cox's Bazar.
The detainees are Mohammad Tanvir, 21, Md Rukmuddin, 42, and Aktar Ahmed, 78. All are residents of different areas of Chakaria.
Coast Guard Station Commander Lieutenant Commander Arafat Hossain disclosed the information at a press conference held at the Coast Guard's Cox's Bazar Base Station this afternoon.
He said the Coast Guard received information around midnight yesterday (5 October) that several people were staying near Badar Auliya Ghat in Badarkhali union of Chakaria upazila, allegedly planning to rob commercial vessels and fishing trawlers at sea.
Later, when a Coast Guard team reached the area, five to six of them noticed the team and attempted to flee. The team chased them and managed to detain three, while the others escaped.
The Coast Guard official said the detainees were members of an organised robbery group whose members were involved in various criminal activities, including buying and selling weapons, piracy, attacks on tourists and robbery.
Preparations are under way to file a case against the detainees with Chakaria Police Station under the relevant law, he added.
