Their demands included

  • Democratic empowerment of regional councils
  • Resolution of land disputes
  • Rehabilitation of displaced ethnic minorities
  • Creation of a separate land commission for indigenous communities

Political activists today (27 February) staged a campaign and distributed leaflets in Chattogram, pressing for the implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Accord among other demands.

They also highlighted the unresolved land disputes in the region, citing the inactivity of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission as a major obstacle.

A procession brought out by the political activists started at Cheragi Pahar intersection and concluded at Shaheed Minar after passing through Anderkilla and Laldighi.

Organised under the banner of the CHT Accord Implementation Movement, the event was attended by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Shah Alam, Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) General Secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan, and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Basad) General Secretary Bazlul Rashid Firoz, among others.

Their demands included a timebound action plan for full implementation of the CHT Accord, democratic empowerment of regional councils, resolution of land disputes, rehabilitation of displaced ethnic minorities, and the establishment of a separate land commission for indigenous communities.

Speaking at the event, CPB President Shah Alam said, "Even after 27 years, the CHT Accord has not been implemented. The government continues to delay, while the land dispute in the hills remains unresolved due to an inactive CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission."

Bangladesh Jasad's Nazmul Haque Prodhan said, "The indigenous people have been struggling for their rights for 27 years. We do not want another armed movement like that waged by the Shanti Bahini. The interim government must implement the accord properly."

Basad General Secretary Bazlul Rashid Firoz added, "An accord was signed between the Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) and the state 27 years ago, yet it remains unfulfilled. Displaced communities have not been rehabilitated, and military presence continues to instill fear."

The event concluded with a speech from CPB Chattogram district president Ashok Saha. Representatives from various rights groups and student organisations also participated
