20 injured in BCL infighting at Cumilla University

At least 20 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Cumilla University were injured in a clash between its two student dormitory units over establishing supremacy on the campus on Saturday.

Kazi Nazrul hall unit BCL President Nazmul Hasan Palash and Mass Communication and Journalism Department student Baizid Ahmed Bappy were among the injured during the clash.

Leaders and activists of Kazi Nazrul hall and Bangabandhu hall units BCL equipped with brick chips, bamboos, wood sticks and rods locked into chasing and counter chasing each other on the campus at 2:30pm.

The situation is not calm yet although the clash has stopped in the presence of the university's proctorial body and the police, sources said.

Critically injured Baizid Ahmed Bappy was taken to hospital.

Prior to Saturday's clash, the BCL units of the two halls locked into a scuffle in front of university's central mosque on Friday noon over a trifling matter while joining jummah prayers.

As a sequel to the enmity, Bangabandhu hall unit BCL activists beat up a student of Kazi Nazrul hall of the university in that evening. In the second phase, BCL activists of two hall units again locked into a clash in front of Bangabandhu Hall at midnight.

Debashish Chowdhury, officer in charge of Sadar Dakshin Police Station, said, "So far, the situation is now under control. We are trying for a permanent solution."

Following the incident, Cumilla University Vice-Chancellor Professor AFM Abdul Moin sat in a meeting with the high officials of the administration to resolve the problem.
