2 shot, another injured in Narayanganj BNP factional clash over garment waste business
Legal action will be taken regarding the incident, says police.
Two people, including a child, were shot and a third injured in a clash between two factions of Jubo Dal, the student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), over control of a garment waste (jhut) business in Narayanganj's Fatullah today (9 April).
The incident occurred around 9:30am in the Chandni Housing area of Enayetnagar Shashangaon under the jurisdiction of Fatullah Model Police Station, Additional Superintendent of Police Hasanuzzaman confirmed.
The injured were identified as Rakib, 23, son of Mohammad Hossain Khoka, organising secretary of Ward No 2 of the Enayetnagar union unit BNP, local BNP leader Rafique, 40, and Imran Hossain, 13, son of local resident Asmaul Hossain.
Among them, Rakib and Imran were shot, the ASP said.
Imran is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, according to his family.
His elder sister Isha Moni said, "While returning from the madrasah near our home, Imran was shot in the stomach or side. He was brought to Dhaka Medical. Doctors said at least eight bags of blood are needed for the surgery."
Police and local sources said supporters of district Jubo Dal member-secretary Moshiur Rahman Roni were collecting jute at Best Style Composite Limited in Chandni Housing, Hariharpara, Enayetnagar Union.
This caused disputes with Fatullah Thana Jubo Dal convener Masudur Rahman and his supporters, leading to the clash.
Eyewitnesses said both sides fired guns and detonated grenades, causing panic among locals and prompting shop closures.
Rakib sustained bullet injuries during the clash, while Rafique was injured by the impact of an explosive device.
Later, locals rescued Rakib and took him to Khanpur 300-bed Hospital, where he received primary treatment before leaving shortly afterwards, eyewitnesses added.
Mohammad Hossain Khoka, aligned with Masudur Rahman, told reporters that Moshiur Roni's supporters, including Enayetnagar Union Jubo Dal member-secretary Khairul Alam Josim and other activists, had stationed themselves in front of the factory.
"When Masudur and his supporters arrived, an attack occurred, and his son was shot while trying to protect him."
Moshiur Rahman Roni told reporters over the phone, "Jute was being collected from the factory today. Those legally collecting jute were attacked. This is a business dispute, not political, and I am not involved in any way. I only learned about the incident after waking up."
ASP Hasanuzzaman said additional police were deployed at the scene after receiving information about the incident.
"We have not yet confirmed which side fired the shots. Police are deployed to maintain normalcy in the area. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident," the ASP added.
