Two people, including a former Swechchhasebak Dal leader, have died and 18 others fell sick after reportedly taking toxic liquor in Kadakati village of Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district on the Eid-ul-Fitr night (31 April).

The deceased were identified as Jakir Hossain Titu, 40, former convener of the Kadakati union Swechchhasebak Dal from Shahnagar village, and party worker Nazmul Hossain, 25, son of Sohrab Hossain from Mitra Tetulia village.

They were taken to Ashashuni Upazila Health Complex and Satkhira Medical College and Hospital yesterday (1 April) where two of them died this morning (2 April).

Speaking to The Business Standard, Ashashuni Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Alamgir Kabir said they consumed an intoxicating substance on Eid night. "Two have died, and the condition of seven others was stated to be critical."

"The bodies have been sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death," the SI added.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Noman Hossain of Ashashuni Police Station said, "The victims' families are not providing much information. We are investigating to uncover more details."

According to locals, on Eid night, around 20-22 friends gathered at a cremation site and consumed alcohol together. By yesterday evening, several of them started falling ill, and eventually, two of them died.

Tuhin Ullah Tuhin, convener of the Kadakati union BNP, stated, "Titu was the former convener of the union Swechchhasebak Dal, while Nazmul Hossain held no official position. The rest of the victims are all party activists. I heard they consumed alcohol together, which led to this tragedy."
